Ruthann Richter, director of media relations at the School of Medicine, will discuss her new book, Face to Face: Children of the AIDS Crisis in Africa, at two upcoming events. The book, a collaboration with San Francisco documentary photographer Karen Ande, blends color photography and narrative to offer a rare and very personal glimpse into the lives of children affected by AIDS in Africa.

“Ruthann Richter and Karen Ande have given a new voice and face to this pandemic, which continues to destroy the hopes, dreams and lives of children,” said Philip Pizzo, MD, dean of the medical school and a specialist in pediatric AIDS. “Through compelling and poignantly informed stories and narratives and incredibly sensitive and touching portraits of children, families, providers and communities, Richter and Ande remind us, in a deeply personal way, how important HIV remains in Africa and beyond.”

Peter Piot, MD, formerly of UNAIDS, notes in the book’s foreword that children have been left behind in the world’s response to AIDS. The book aims to serve as a call to action, with examples of how individuals and organizations can intervene to transform the life of a child.

The author and photographer will do a presentation Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Kepler’s Books, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park. They will also do a slideshow/presentation at Café Scientifique at the Stanford Blood Center, 3373 Hillview Ave. in Palo Alto, on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

Published by Hope Publishing House, the book will be for sale at the events for $39.95 and is available for purchase online at www.facetofaceafrica.com.  Proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to support orphaned and vulnerable children in Sub-Saharan Africa, a few of whom are profiled in the book.
