Search is crucial
In the world of the web, the old adage - build it and they will come - doesn't necessarily apply. No matter how great your site is, it won't see much traffic unless you make it easy to access and people know that it exists. The following factors are known to influence page rank and searchability:
- Exitstence - Can't be indexed if it's 404
- Linking - Search engines won't find a page unless it's linked from somewhere already indexed
- Browser title - After existence and linking, this is one of the most important factors you can control. The browser title should be unique, start with the most specific, most important term, and work toward the more general, ending with the name of the school, and/or Stanford Medicine.
- Meta Tags - Code added to your page to provide additional information seen by search engines, not users. Read this article to learn more.
- Integration into the Stanford Medicine Web Site - Linking from our site maps can start the indexing of your site, and lends page rank
