Important Things All Web Authors Need To Know

Don't Panic: Although important, and sometimes even urgent, there's no need to freak out when/if a Web page breaks. Get in touch with Web Help and we'll help you get it fixed.

Help is Available: Dreamweaver and Contribute have built-in Help menus with Tutorials and user guides. IRT maintains the Web Help desk to answer questions and help you get things done. FAQ's and guides | The Web Help form: http://webhelp.stanford.edu/

The Format: All official Stanford Medicine entities should use an IRT-approved standard format and be hosted by IRT. We handle all the initial setup for your site whether we build it or you do. You can learn more about out Web Development services.

Security: All server access is secured. A SUNet ID is required for access. Request access via the Web Help form.

Restricted Information: Do not use your public Web site to serve or store anything containing patient information governed by HIPAA, or any personal information, such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, date of birth, etc. If you need to store or manage any such information, contact IRT to request help first.

File & Directory Names: File names have an impact on usability and searchability by Google and other search engings. The best file names are short, include a key word or words and don't repeat terms in the directory name, e.g. /fellowships/fellowship-info.html Avoid using spaces or special characters (#,@, etc.) in file or directory names. Instead, use hyphens (-) or underscores (_) to separate words. This applies to all files.

Templates: Pages in the new format are controlled by Dreamweaver Templates. You must use either Dreamweaver or Contribute, software from Adobe (formerly Macromedia). 

Default File: "index.html" When a browser URL ends with a slash (/) rather than something.html, the server automatically looks for “index.html” Therefore, the URLs http://med.stanford.edu/ and http://med.stanford.edu/index.html are equivalent.

Browser Basics: Get to know your browser. Learn the menus and how to save images, rollover links to find the file path, view source, etc.

Application integration: IRT has created several central Web applications to manage information such as Profiles, Seminars, and Clinical Trials. With a simple twist of the URL, pages and views from these applications can be seamlessly integrated with your static site.

Domains: The official URL of the school is “med.stanford.edu." All new school development, maintenance and printed matter should use http://med.stanford.edu/ without any www. The official URL of the main Stanford Hospital & Clinics site is stanfordhospital.org, without any www. The official URL of the Stanford Medicine site is stanfordmedicine.org, without any www.
