Get Your Site Files from the Server
When you begin working
on a site, you will need to "Get" all the site's files from
IRT's server. As you edit files and create new ones locally, you will "Put"
them to the server to publish them. You can also get individual files and should get a fresh copy of each file before you work on it, to ensure it is current.

- You should already have a Local Root Folder, created when you set up your connection.
- Connect to the Remote Site by clicking on the "Connect"
button.

- Enter your password into the dialog box and click "OK."
Don't click "Save Password." Saving your password in Dreamweaver
is not recommended, for security reasons.
- Examine the Files panel. Note the different views for Remote and Local files. The dual-pane files window is shown here; access it by clicking on the blue Expand/Collapse button
- Contribute Sites: If the site has been set up for Contribute, accessing the site prompts an alert and decision regarding Contribute compatibility; click "No" unless you know that you need this compatibility (contact Web Help if you think you need to manage your Contribute users through Dreamweaver).
- When connected, you should see a list of files in the Remote Site panel.
Select the top-most folder in either the Remote Site or Local Files panel.
- Click the down arrow button to "Get" the files from the Remote Site. You will see an alert that you are
copying the entire site. Click "OK."
Note: Select files and folders to get them individually.
- You can click "No" when prompted about dependent files
when getting the whole site.
- You should now have a list of files in your Local Folder.
You now have all of your site files and are one step away from editing your pages. If you open any page file, it doesn't
look like it does in the browser. Set up your local
Templates folder next.
A note on backups before editing
You can back up an entire site by duplicating the whole local folder on your desktop. You can back up individual files on your desktop by copying them from the live local folder and pasting them into a backup folder. In Dreamweaver, you can duplicate and re-name files, e.g. "index-old.html" or "index~.html"
