The tabs | Link menu maintenance | What belongs under the tabs Most subsites have a row of four tabs, one each for the major missions of the school: Education, Research, Patient Care and Community. Mousing over each tab reveals a drop-down menu of links to pages that are associated with that mission. For example, Fellowships might deserve an item on the Education drop-down.
The TabsOn the school Home and other school-wide pages the olive-colored tabs and menus link to school-wide sites and pages relevant to that mission for the entire school. On "Tier 3" subsites -- those of departments, divisions and other groups -- these blue-colored tabs and menus link to pages relevant to the mission for that group and it's site. There is at least one page for each of the tabs, an overview of activities and content related to that mission for that group.
Pages within a given mission area should appear with that tab highlighted. This is done via code in the BreadCrumb links file, explained elsewhere. Some topics may be appropriate under more than one tab. Other topics are site-wide or group-wide in scope and should not be under any tab. Links to these pages can appear in the left navigation, a more complete set of links to site contents. Link Menu MaintenanceTab menus are now managed by individual site maintainers using a Web application called MenuManager. Here's how:
1) You must be an official maintainer for a department, division or site with blue tabs. Maintainers of olive tab and tabless sites do not need to be concerned with Tab menus. If you wish to become an official mainainter for any site, contact WebHelp. 2) Go to the MenuManager site (will appear in new browser window) and log in with your SUNet ID. 3) After clearing authentication, if you only maintain one site you will be taken directly to the edit function for your site's tabs. If you maintain more than one, you will be presented a list of sites who's tabs you can edit, so choose one. 4) Click the Edit link for the tab you wish to update. 5) Use the form to add new link text and URLs. Link text must be very short, 25 characters or less, and should fit on one line. You can also use the form to move links up or down in the menu list. The "Overview" link to the mission's home page is required, although the label text can be edited. 6) All changes are reflected immediately on the live site. Be sure to validate your updates in your regular browser by viewing the site and testing them. What Does (and Doesn't) Belong Under the TabsHere are some lists of items appropriate for each tab.
