Introduction to SoM Web
The primary focus of SoM sites is the external audience, including prospective
students, faculty, researchers, staff and professional peers. Sites also
serve internal audiences in important ways.
The new design brings consistency to users’ experience of School
of Medicine sites, facilitating our missions and businesses, and enhancing
the prestige of our groups and of the school as a whole.
SoM
Web Tiers
Pages and subsites in the new SoM Web format are grouped into three tiers:
Tier 1: The School
Home page stands alone as the only page in Tier 1. The four olive
tabs are expanded, with explanatory text. Their menus connect to Tier 2
sites and pages related to the four key missions of the school, and other
links connect to important school or site resources. Home includes live
news feeds from the Office of Communications & Public Affairs, the
Dean's bi-weekly newsletter and rotating profiles of prominent faculty
researchers.
Tier 2: All school-wide concepts,
including home pages for topics such as Education,
Research, Patient
Care and Community,
specifics of programs in each of these core mission areas, school-wide
offices such as the Dean's Office
and Student Affairs, as well
as site navigation pages
and general school information.
Tier 2 sites can be recognized by the Olive mission tabs. Like the Home
page, they all share menus containing links to school-wide pages and sites.
Some have Olive text for the site's "brand" name.

Tier 3: Includes all official Departments,
Divisions, institutes, subgroups beyond divisions
(such as Centers & Programs and Labs)
and most administrative offices. Tier 3 sites can be recognized by
the Blue header label (branding for the group or site) and Blue tabs,
which contain localized menus for links to mission-associated pages
in the site.

More about tabs
Tabs are a key part of the header and are used to convey the four key
missions of the school, Education, Research, Patient Care and Community,
in a way that is relevant to the user for this site. They cannot be changed
or re-labeled from these four topics.
There are 3 types of header-tab configurations:
Tier 2 (Olive tabs): For school-wide
topics, offices and functions. All olive tabs and menus contain a common
set of school-wide links for the mission. They are maintained centrally
by IRT.

Tier 3 (Blue tabs): For departments,
divisions and dependent groups. Tabs and tab menus link to local mission-related
pages and are required for all official Departments and Divisions of the
school. These groups should have at least a home page for each tab relevant
to their group. More guidance on mission
tabs and pages can be found in the Style
Guide.

Tier 3 tab-less (no tabs): For
sites which are largely for school-internal information, services or groups,
or where tabs would be confusing or inappropriate.
