Analyzing your Site with Webtrends

Any department, center and program can run its own Webtrends profile to analyze traffic patterns to and within its site. If your group does not yet have a Webtrends profile, you can request one through the Webhelp form.

  • If you are an authorized Webtrends user for your group, you can log into your group’s profile using your SUNet ID.

Webtrends Calendar Overview

By default, Webtrends will present information from the most recent day that data was collected. You can modify the time period over which a report is run using the calendar panel in the upper right-hand of the Webtrends dashboard.

main calendar view Main Calendar View allows you to choose a pre-defined report period ( ie. one week, one month, two months) from a drop-down menu.

custom calendar view Custom Calendar View allows you to create a custom report by selecting a period of time more specific to your needs. For example, instead of selecting a standard 7-day week, you can select a range of 9 days.

compare calendar view Calendar Compare View allows you to compare data from two predefined report periods by applying the options from the drop-down list for each calendar.

custom compare calendar view Custom Calendar Compare View allows you to compare data from two customized report periods. When you adjust the range for one calendar, it will automatically adjust the dates for the other calendar.

Webtrends Reports Overview

By default, Webtrends will present data from the Department Overview report. Additional reports are available under the left navigation heading, IRT Customized Reports. These include:

visitor graph

Site Visitors Reports: The Visitor Dashboard identifies top visitors to your site by their IP address, domain name or cookie; where they are from geographically; and their activity level on your site. Information includes average duration of visit and average number of visits per visitors. A visitor is counted as having more than one visit to your site if he or she logs off and then returns to your site during the defined time period for a given report.

Site Visits Reports: These reports identify such traffic trends as the number of pages viewed during a visit, as well as what time of day and what days of the week your site is most heavily trafficked.

Note: A site visit is defined as a series of actions that begins when a visitor views their first page from the server, and ends when the visitor leaves the site or remains idle beyond the idle-time limit. The default idle-time limit is 30 minutes.

pages graph

Page Views Reports: Reports under the Pages Dashboard identify the most popular pages on your site, the number of visits to a given page and the average length of time a page was viewed. Information on the most common pages by which visitors enter and leave your site is also provided.

Note: A page view is defined as a hit to any file classified as a page.

The sample Pages Report shown here indicates the most popular pages on the Department of Anesthesia's site during the week of May 14-20, 2006. This report additionally allows users to drilldown into each page for more granular data on that page's traffic, including number of views and average duration of visit.

Referrers Reports: Reports under the Referrers chapter track how visitors arrive at your site. For example, they show the most common phrases used to find your site in search engines, as well as the sites--both within and outside of the school's Web environment--that refer visitors to your site by linking to it.

Geography graph

Geography Reports: The Geography Dashboard provides data on the physical location of visitors to your site, whether in the United States or abroad.

Technical Reports: These reports track the browsers and platforms used by visitors to your site, as well as the nature and incidence of any error messages received by visitors.
