Hosting for sites not developed by IRT

Any new project begins with a discussion with Kevin Boyd, Lead Web Designer ( 650-498-7734), or if Kevin isn't available, with Michael Halaas, Director of Web & New Media Services ( 650-498-6387).

Please familiarize yourself with our hosting requirements. IMPORTANT: Development of CGI, PERL, or other scripts and database or other web applications is not permitted on the IRT server, only static files, such as html, jpg, gif, swf, doc, xls, ppt, etc. Many server-driven processes are available and can be explored under the Web Applications section. If you find you need a back-end process not currently provided, we also develop those, so contact us.

School of Medicine IRT will host any site directly related to the School of Medicine free of charge, but only maintains top-level resources like the school home page and local home. It is the responsibility of the various departments, divisions and groups to maintain their own sites after publication. Each group should have a person who is responsible for site maintenance. Ideally, this is one person, but large sites are sometimes divided up and maintained by more than one person. Each maintainer needs to request authorized access to the www.med server (a special login and password), as does any contractor working on the site.

Setting up the site can follow one of two paths:

Path 1: School of Medicine IRT establishes a directory for the site; client obtains account on server and file permissions for directory; client uploads files whenever ready, and handles ongoing maintenance.

Path 2: When the site's files are ready for hosting, client sends files to School of Medicine IRT, via email compressed in a .zip or Stuffit archive, or delivered by mail or hand on floppy disk(s), zip100 cartridge, or CD-ROM; School of Medicine IRT sets up directory and populates it with client's files; client obtains account on server and file permissions for directory; client handles ongoing maintenance.

We will provide directions on getting an account and permissions when you are ready to take control of the site.

  • We recommend Dreamweaver or Contribute for maintaining your site. Please see our Publishing Guide for further information.

  • We recommend that site maintainers sign up for our Web-Announce email group, to receive developer and training announcements.

  • Help is available for just about any Web-related topic at Web Help.

  • Once your site is published, School of Medicine IRT can make sure your site is listed on the School of Medicine Site Map and Departments pages. We can also help you get the site indexed in the Stanford Google Search Index, and the Stanford A-Z index. If you are developing your own site or using a contractor, we won't know to do this until you tell us. The best bet is to contact Web Help with the site's URL and information about the site's place in the hierarchy (part of what department? is it a cross-department program or center? etc.)

Thank you for your interest in School of Medicine IRT's services.
