How to Work With MedBlog
Blogs are managed through the Moveable Type Web interface found at http://medblog.stanford.edu/mt.cgi
The Moveable Type interface is fairly easy to learn. If you're not sure how to do something, consult first with the MT Help page or the blog's primary author. If you encounter any errors, please submit a help request using the WebHelp form; provide your blog URL, the problem you are experiencing, and the error code, if any.
Tips for Using MedBlog
- Log in with your SUNet ID and the password provided by Web Help. Do not share this password with anyone but IRT staff. After logging in, we recommend that you click "Edit Your Profile" to change your password and enter your Birthplace for Password Recovery, in case you ever lose or forget your password.
- To enter your blog, click on your blog's name on the Main Menu page in MedBlog.
- Use the Moveable Type web interface to create categories, make postings and approve comments. Make sure to associate your postings with the appropriate categories. Links to categories archive pages only appear in the links list when the category in question has at least one published posting.
- Click "View Site" after making changes to see your results. Note that published entries and approved comments are available immediately on the public blog site.
- Check the status of Comments when posting. Set to "Open," your posting will include a form for anyone to send you a comment. Comments are not displayed until you approve. If notified about comments, you can review them and reject or approve them through the Comments panel. NOTE: Leaving Comments "Open" eventually invites form spam, so you may want to limit how long Comments are left open. Set to "Closed" if you want to display comments already approved. Set to "None" if you don't want any comments or the form to show.
- Be sure to review the Stanford Terms of Use policy before beginning. This page covers important HIPAA and other legal requirements for which you are responsible.
Student and Other Personal Blogs
- If your blog includes a placeholder shield image (right), above your main links, you can replace it with your own image:
- create an image 150px X 150px, named "aboutme.jpg"
- use the Upload File command in MedBlog
- be sure to use the "<Local Site Path>/" selector
- when prompted about overwriting the existing image, click "Yes." You can ignore and close the final window about creating an entry and HTML.
- You need to have at least one posting in the "About Me" category. The entry headline does not have to be "About Me," although this is acceptable.
For Web Authors
If you also handle publication of an associated static School of Medicine site, you will find a directory for the blog's files within the directory for your main site's files when you view it through Dreamweaver. The directory name will usually be reflected in the blog's URL.
We suggest you avoid uploading files from this directory to the server, as they should be managed through MedBlog. If you get all the site files from the server, delete the blog folder from your local folder for the site. You can then synchronize individual files, ranges of files and/or directories by selecting them on the Local side, without downloading or interfering with the blog directory.
Access for Additional Authors
Requests for access by new authors should be coordinated with the blog's primary author, if practical. To request access to a blog, use the WebHelp form.
