Web-Based Multi-Media Module as Educational Tool for Housestaff

Project Overview

The goal of the project is to improve the communication process between the ICU housestaff and the patients and families in the ICU. The study will utilize a combination of on-line slide presentations, as well as self-guided film-vignettes with attached questions. The presentations cover topics including: grief processing, cultural differences in emotions, chronic illness, medical ethics, palliative care, euthanasia, physician burnout.

The filmed vignettes – which is what I am writing this grant proposal to help develop – involve filmed actors playing the roles of an ICU physician, a patient, family members, as well as other ICU personnel – such as ICU nurses, social worker, chaplain. The scenario will be an unfolding family discussion, during which various issues arise, and at specified points in the scenario the vignette will pause, and the learner will be queried about what the correct set of action is in terms of the discussion.

Feedback will be given as an explanation of the various issues and factors involved in the psychodynamics, rather than “right or wrong”, and the vignette will then proceed to the next decision.
