The Essentials of Recognizing a Critically Ill Child
Project Overview
Most medical students will enter specialties in which they are trained to care for adult patients. However, in many fields ranging from emergency medicine to radiology, these physicians may eventually work in a location where they must care for some pediatric patients. The objective of this simulation session is to learn the management of an acutely ill child and not to learn specific disease processes. Specifically:
- Recognizing the critically ill child and the rapidity with which they decompensate as compared to adult patients
- Incorporating multiple pieces of data, e.g. the history, vital signs, physical exam findings, lab studies, into the recognition process
- Learning the essentials of resuscitating an acutely decompensating / arresting child
- Acquiring technical skills in managing a critically ill child, i.e. choosing the correct size mask, bag-mask ventilation, interosseous placement, use of a Braslow tape
