School of Medicine Firewall Overview
In order to increase computer security and comply with federal and state requirements, Information Resources and Technology (IRT) has been implementing a network security firewall to protect all computers at the School of Medicine from Internet attacks.
This protection has already been successfully implemented at many of the existing locations at the School of Medicine. On Wednesday, October 24th 2007, we will start phase III of this project - implementing the firewall for the remainder of the School of Medicine. Follow this link for the School of Medicine Firewall Implementation schedule.
Once implemented, all of the computers within the School of Medicine will refuse connections initiated from outside the Stanford University campus*. This should not effect access to email, Web browsing or any other connections to external systems. However if you are responsible for a computer on the School's network that provides Internet services, such as a web server, FTP server, or file server to off-campus* computers, you must notify us in advance so that we can configure the firewall to accommodate these services. To do this, please send an email to firewall@med.stanford.edu, with the name of the system you are requesting an exception for and the specific ports you need open for the system also.
The School of Medicine VPN service can be utilized to access School of Medicine systems from off-campus without a need for firewall exceptions. VPN is ideal for intermittent remote access (e.g. accessing server or workstation resources while at home or on the road.) If you have any questions please call the IRT Help Desk at 725-8000 or
email firewall@med.stanford.edu
*The on-campus residence halls are considered off-campus. Connections from residence halls will require VPN or an exception to be filed via
the web form.
