Q: What do I need to do to get a new computer on the network?

A: If you already have a network connection (if not, see #4, below), you can use the Self Registration system to register both wired and wireless connections.

To use this new procedure:

1. Plug in your computer to any Medical School network jack (TSO).
2. Make sure your wireless card is enabled, if you have one.
3. Open a web browser and it should redirect you to the self registration page (if it does not, try going to a specific web page (such at www.stanford.edu and then it should redirect you).
4. Follow the on screen instructions through the Self Registration process.

If you have any problems, please submit a HelpSU request describing your issue. Otherwise, call us at (650)725-8000, option 2.  We may require some or all of the following information when following up with any problems with Self Registration.

  1. Building name and room number
  2. Name of the person who will be using the computer
  3. Department Name
  4. Manufacturer and model of computer/device
  5. Operating System (ie: MacOS X, Windows 2000, etc.)
  6. Name, e-mail, and phone number for the person responsible for your computing environment (this might be you!)
  7. The hardware/physical address of your ethernet card or LAN card. On Apple computers, this is known as the Ethernet ID.
  8. The hardware/physical address of your wireless card if you have one. On Apple computers, this known as the Airport ID.

(Now would be a good time to mention setting your computer to automatically update Windows and Norton AntiVirus.) This and other useful information can be found at the IRT Data Security section.

Q: How do I get my iPhone registered for network access?

There's an entire website full of useful iPhone at Stanford info, put together by SU ITS at http://iphone.stanford.edu.  As mentioned on that webpage, you'll need to submit a HelpSU request including the WiFi address of your iPhone.  The WiFi address can be found by:

Tap the Home button and then tap the Settings icon.
Tap General.
Tap About.
Scroll down to Wi-Fi Address and carefully copy down the number displayed there.
Tap the Home button to return to the Home screen.

Q: How do I know what my Hardware (Adapter) Address is?

The simplest way to obtain your Hardware Address, current IP Address and OS & version for your current connection is to click here.

Obtaining information in addition to your current Hardware Address varies for different Operating Systems. Follow this link to get detailed instructions (especially for multiple ethernet interfaces or machines not on the network).

Q: What do I need to do to get a new printer on the network?

Mainly, this is the same procedure as getting a new computer on the network (above). But with the added complexity that your computers will likely need to be configured to print to the new printer. If you need support from us to assist in this process, either submit a HelpSU request or call us at (650)725-8000, option 2.

Q: My computer works somewhere else, but it doesn't work here. How can this be fixed?

It might be that your computer is plugged in to the wrong walljack in your TSO (faceplate). It should usually be plugged in to the top orange jack (newer TSOs), and with a cable with phone-like-but-larger connectors (RJ45) on each end.

Or, It may be that the walljack (TSO) to which you are connecting your computer is not currently active. We can activate it for you. We would need to know the numbers off of the faceplate of the TSO. Typically these numbers are something like "3.2 3041".

Q: Nobody in my area can use their network connections. How do I report this?

Then how can you read this page?? No, seriously, in the event of a large-scale network outage, the best thing to do is to call us at (650)725-8000, option 3.

Q: My network connection is not working, but others are OK. What do I do?

Ideally, submit a HelpSU request. Otherwise, call us at (650)725-8000, option 2.

Q: What do you charge for your services?

Nothing. We are centrally funded by the Med School Dean's Office to provide Networking support.
