Planned network configuration

Note that this configuration will be standard for the project. For specific user requirements, some exceptions may be justified and, depending upon the cost and requirements, may need to be attained on a cost-shared basis.

Wiring

Standard wallplate configurations:

  • Offices will include 2 voice/2 data. Depending on the building, the wallplates will be manufactured by either AT&T or Leviton.
  • Labs will include 1 voice/2 data. In many cases, these will be installed directly to the desk space adjoining the lab benches. Generally, at least one TSO will also be installed next to the entrance to the labs.
  • Conference rooms will include 2 voice/2 data/1 video/1 pair multimode fiber.

Standard network connections:

  • One switched 10 baseT/100baseT connection to a single machine.
  • Connecting anything other than an end-node (such as a piece of networking hardware) is not allowed. This measure is for both security and reliability purposes.

Standard backbone connections:

  • Fiber optic cable will be installed to most IDFs from a central distribution location - either within the building or in a main telecommuncations hub.
  • Most equipment within a building will be connected using gigabit ethernet.

Facilities:

  • In most cases, existing closets will be consolidated so that more wiring can be distributed from fewer locations.
  • New telecommunications closets may be constructed or some renovation may be required to existing facilities.
