Adding a Computer to the Domain - II

Join a computer to the domain

  1. Log into the computer you wish to join to the domain as a user with local administrator rights. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties". Then select the "Network Identification" tab. The window should look something like this:

  1. First make sure the computer name matches the name of the corresponding computer object you have created in the domain. If it doesn’t, you will need to recreate the computer account and delete the misnamed one.
  2. Click the "Properties" button and a window like this should appear:

  1. Check the "Domain" radio button and enter "som.win.stanford.edu" as the domain name.

    5. Hit the Ok button, you will now see the authorization window, use your SOM\som.username admin account:

Click "OK." It may take a few moments before you receive a response. It will then ask you for a user ID and password with rights to add computers. Type in SOM\som.username and password. Within 2 minutes, you should receive a window welcoming you to the domain like this one.

Your computer is now in the som.win.stanford.edu domain, if you see receive the window welcoming you to the domain, like below:

Hit Ok, You will be prompted to restart, but choose no.

You will be back at the Computer name change page, choose the More button.

  1. Uncheck "Change primary DNS suffix?" and enter "stanford.edu" in the field as shown in the picture and click "OK".
  2. Now reboot our computer

The first time booting will take a little longer as domain GPOs are applied.

You will also see the Computer Network policy for the first time. You must agree to this to get the logon screen.

You will now be presented with a login prompt, and you will see multiple domain choices, including your local computer name, WIN, SU, SOM, GSB, IT, and stanford.edu(Kerberos Realm).

Common problems

You may receive an error message at this point. Common reasons for problems at this point are:

The computer account wasn’t created in the OU

If you dont see Stanford.edu(Kerberos Realm), then check that the kdc.reg was applied

If you see Stanford.edu(Kerberos Realmn), but cant login, then make sure PC-leland is the current version

The domain controllers for the domain you want to join couldn’t be located; make sure your TCP/IP settings are configured correctly. Make sure the tcp Nethelper service is running.
