School given $20 million to study cancer stem cells
The medical school has received a $20 million gift from the Virginia and D.K.
Ludwig Fund to establish a new world-class research enterprise to study cancer
stem cells, which are believed to be at the heart of most cancers. The center
will be led by Irving Weissman, the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Professor for
Clinical Investigation and director of the Stanford Institute for Stem Cell
Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Five other academic centers also received
funding. Weissman and Dean Philip Pizzo are quoted in a similar article in the
Stanford Daily. Articles also appear in the Associated Press, Oakland Tribune,
Palo Alto Daily News, Palo Alto Online, San Francisco Chronicle and Washington

Naps may benefit night-shift nurses and doctors
This article discusses a recent Stanford study that showed that doctors and
nurses who were allowed a short nap while working the night shift in an
emergency room showed improved mood, a higher alertness level and the ability to
complete a simulated I.V. insertion more quickly. Rebecca Smith-Coggins, associate professor of surgery, is quoted in this article.
