An interactive panel of alumni experts from the Stanford School of Medicine discussed the latest scientific information on nutrition, exercise, weight control, and stress management. Below are a list of resources recommended by them.

RESILIENCE RESOURCES:

  1. "Full Catastrophe Living" or anything written or recorded by Jon Kabat-Zinn
    Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., is a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher engaged in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society.
    He is professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he was founding executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society, as well as founder and former director of its world-renowned Stress Reduction Clinic. He is the author of "Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness"; "Wherever You Go, There You Are": "Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life"; Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World Through Mindfulness"; and co-author, with his wife, Myla, of "Everyday Blessings: The Inner Work of Mindful Parenting". He lectures and leads retreats on mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for health professionals worldwide. He received a Pioneer in Integrative Medicine award from the Bravewell Collaborative in 2007 and the 2008 Mind & Brain Prize from the Center for Cognitive Science at the University of Turin, Italy. His books are in print in more than thirty languages.
  2. "The How of Happiness" by Sonja Lyubomirsky
    The How of Happiness is a comprehensive guide to understanding the elemetns of happiness based on years of groundbreaking scientific research. It is also a practical, empowering, and easy-to-follow workbook, incorporating happiness strategies, excercises in new ways of thinking, and quizzes for understanding our individuality, all in an effort to help us realize our innate potential for joy and ways to sustain it in our lives. Drawing upon years of pioneering research with thousands of men and women, The How of Happiness is both a powerful contribution to the field of positive psychology and a gift to people who have sought to take their happiness into their own hands.
  3. "The Relaxation Response" Benson, Herbert, M.D. with Miram Z. Klipper. New York: Avon Books, 1975.
  4. "Breathing for Longevity, Love and Livelihood" by Tia Rich. This is a 5.5 hr spoken-word book providing facts about breathing anatomy and physiology, as well as guided breathing exercises and mediations.
  5. "The Compassionate Mind: A new approach to life's challenges" Paul Gilbert
    Paul Gilbert, PhD, is world-renowned for his work on depression, shame, and self-criticism. He is head of the mental health research unit at the University of Derby and author of The Compassionate Mind and Overcoming Depression.
