Overview of the Office of Government Relations
Ryan M. Adesnik joined Stanford last month as the director of the newly established government relations office in the School of Medicine.
The office was created to focus on public policy, part of the school’s strategic plan. In his role, Adesnik will promote the significance of academic medicine and help develop a program of government relations.
"I am honored to become part of the medical school’s distinguished team," said Adesnik. He added that he aims to enhance Stanford’s role in the public debate on medical issues and health-care policy in Washington, D.C., and the state of California, and to work in partnership with federal, state and local governments.
"The challenges facing academic medical centers necessitate an informed and proactive interface with the public as well as the private sector," said Philip Pizzo, MD, dean of the medical school. "Establishing a government relations office will help us inform colleagues in government, both locally and nationally, about the work we are carrying out in education, research and patient care. It will also help us to advocate for the future success of our important mission on behalf of the community."
Adesnik joined Stanford from the Carmen Group of Washington, D.C., a firm that represents corporations, teaching hospitals, private universities, nonprofit philanthropies and others before the government. He served as vice president of the organization and provided legislative counsel, political strategy and issue-oriented research. Previously, he served as senior legislative aide to Rep. Benjamin A. Gilman of New York.
