Reach Out and Read

Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national, evidence-based, early-literacy program comprised of medical providers who promote school readiness in pediatric exam rooms by integrating children’s books and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.   In the ROR model, medical providers give a developmentally appropriate book to each child and reading tips to parents -- at each well child visit prior to school entry.  Members of the Division of General Pediatrics contributed to the early research supporting the efficacy of the ROR model.  All primary-care clinics in the Division of General Pediatrics implement and practice the ROR model, serving over 10,000 children per year.
