Advancing Medical Knowledge Through Clinical Research

The Stanford General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is the major clinical
research facility for Stanford University School of Medicine. With patient
care units in Stanford University Hospital and Lucile Packard Children's
Hospital
, the center plays a crucial role in the school's bench-to-bedside
research mission.

Our goals are to provide an optimal facility for the conduct of
patient-oriented research, to translate basic scientific knowledge into a
better understanding and treatment of human diseases, and to train health
professionals in clinical research.

GCRC's distinguished history in clinical innovation includes the development
of cardiac transplantation, the cure of Hodgkin's disease, the introduction
of monoclonal antibodies as therapies for cancers, and studies of insulin
resistance in diabetes.

The center currently supports 156 active protocols studying new therapies
for cancers, HIV infection, insulin resistance and its relationship to
type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD), psychotic depression, and
other diseases, as well as studies involving nutrition and therapeutic
compliance. These protocols involve more than 100 faculty members from 28 academic departments.
