Pre-Clerkship Students

1. Get help from EdTech

  • Refer to the information on this page and website, particularly the Getting Started and iOS Tutorials section.
  • iPad Office Hours will be held from 8:30-9:00am in LK101 during first week of classes.

2. Install iTunes and create an iTunes account

  • On your primary computer, download and install iTunes
  • Open iTunes and select Create Account from the Store menu
  • Once you have created your account, sign in using the Sign In button in the top right or the option from the Store menu

3. Self-register iPad for wireless

  • On the iPad home screen, select Settings, Wi-Fi and set the switch to On
  • Look for and select the network named "Stanford"
  • Open Safari and go to any URL. You'll be directed to the Stanford University Network Options page.
  • Choose the Network Registration option
  • Enter your SUNetID and password and follow the on screen instructions to register your device
  • Leave Department/Location as the default
  • For Room Number, you may put enter "student" if you do not have a designated office/lab
  • Mark Yes for Stanford Property
  • Mark Yes for Restricted Data

4. Enroll in Mobile Device Management

The easiest way to get started with your iPad on campus is to sign up for Stanford's mobile device management tool. This tool will automate the set up of a number of settings, including:

  • Email, calendar and contacts
  • Passcode, encrypted backups, fraud warning alerts and third-party cookie blocking
  • VPN access

You can also use mobile device management to reset your iPad's passcode, and remotely erase all or only non-Stanford data in the event the device is lost or stolen. For more information and to get started, please visit IT Services' mobile device managment page.

6. Register and Sync iPad with iTunes

  • Plug in your iPad to your computer with iTunes open
  • If prompted to install the latest iPad software, choose Install.
  • On the "Welcome to your new iPad" screen, click Continue
  • Log in with your Apple iTunes account.
  • Fill out your contact information and click Submit
  • Ensure that your iPad is selected under Devices to see sync options
  • On the Summary tab, check the Encrypt iPad backup box and enter a password for your backup.
  • On the Apps tab, select Sync Apps and select your existing Apps.
  • When iPad is connected, you can use tabs to manage iPad data.

iPad Test Station

In the lobby of the LKSC, you'll find an iPad test station. This station has an iPad loaded with apps along with various models of styluses for you to try out. We would like your feedback on apps and accessories you like or would recommend to other students or to faculty members. To give us feedback at any time, use this form.

Apps We Like

  • For mobile medical app reviews and news, iMedicalApps is excellent.
  • iAnnotate for reading documents, managing files and annotation.
  • Goodreader for file management and reading documents
  • AV Player HD for watching class videos. It has a great feature set and allows for 2X playback of videos.
  • Evernote for entering and reviewing notes, as well as providing a backup of your notes in the case that something would happen to your computer or iPad.
  • Stanford has contracted with to give all users:
      • Single sign-on using your Stanford SUNet ID
      • Individual permissions on documents and folders
      • Document version control
      • Document sharing and collaboration with Box users within and external to Stanford
      • 15 GB of cloud storage per user; individual file sizes up to 5 GB
      • Desktop folder synchronization with Box
      • Encryption of files at Box and over the network
      • Mobile clients for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry
