Chris Shay

Chris Shay, Director of Projects in the Office of Facilities Planning & Management, winner of this year's SPIRIT Award is almost always smiling. He's able to maintain a sunny disposition while managing an extremely busy workload. Chris played a key role in the construction of the Li Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge and the Lorry I. Lokey Stem Cell Research Building. He began his career at Stanford in October of 2000 in the School of Medicine, before leaving for a three-year stint with the State Department in Hanoi, Vietnam, returning in late 2007 in time to lead these two capital projects.

According to one colleague, Chris puts his heart and soul in the work he does and it shows. Shay doesn't have an easy job — among his many duties are developing programs, hiring architects and contractors, budgeting, staffing, scheduling, serving as liaison for all involved parties, and leading lots and lots of building tours. But co-workers reported that he has no problem juggling the various balls while maintaining a sunny outlook. "He was able to infuse his passion for the projects into those around him in a way that made the entire transformation very positive," wrote one colleague in a nomination letter.

Chris expects to be busier in the years to come. He said his workload is larger now than it was during construction of the Lokey building and the LKSC.  "It can be stressful, but it's exciting," Shay said — with, of course, a smile.

Vu is very much a constant for the students: attending every lecture, lab and test, and offering help to students outside of the classroom. He obviously takes great pride in being there for the students and getting to know them: One of the first things he does with new batches of students, he said, is to learn their names. And he's known for bringing in edible treats for the students on exam days.

These gestures obviously make an impression: Colleagues and students used words like "thoughtful," "dedicated," and "helpful" when discussing him. And one letter of nomination described him as embodying "much more than his title as HHD Course Coordinator he is our class cheerleader, organizer extraordinaire, and an always positive support figure."

Inspiring Change Leadership Award

Sonia Barragan

Sonia has been at Stanford since 1995, when she started in the Department of Psychiatry Sleep Disorders Center as an Administrative Assistant, and then served as a Data Aide and a Financial Analyst. In 2000 she moved to the Research Management Group (RMG) as a Research Process Manager Associate.  Within only a year she was promoted to Research Process Manager and in 2009 she was promoted to Associate Director.

Sonia strives for excellence and has made extraordinary contributions to RMG and the SoM.  She was instrumental in RMG's efforts to support SoM faculty with the submission of 500+ grant proposals in response to the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding opportunities.  Sonia successfully coordinated the transition of RMG's grant files from paper to electronic (over 1-million pieces of paper).  She designed and implemented the RMG Log of proposal and award transactions to monitor workload, develop metrics, and provide departments with the ability to track status of their transactions. She is playing a significant role in the development and implementation of the University's new research administration system, SeRA.

Sonia handles all her responsibilities with dedication and integrity.  She approaches challenges with patience and grace even in stressful situations.  She is considerate of her staff and customer's needs and is helpful and responsive.  Her communication style is clear and thoughtful.  Sonia ALWAYS has a smile on her face.  She is truly an exceptional manager and person and represents RMG and the SoM at its finest!

Nancy Lonhart

Nancy Lonhart

Nancy Lonhart has led change and innovation within two research centers, the Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research (PCOR) and the Center for Health Policy (CHP) by fulfilling the spirit of the "Inspiring Change Leadership" award activities (implementing new processes, systems, organizational structures, or operating paradigms) and goals (transformative improvements in service, efficiency, value, effectiveness, outcome, or satisfaction). The centers' scope is quite large and complex, with relationships within the Departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, across the university, the Stanford Center for Longevity, Economics, Management Science and Engineering, Stanford Institute for Economics and Policy Research, and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.  Nancy Lonhart joined the centers in July of 2007, before which she served the University as administrative services manager for the Department of Anthropological Sciences in the School of Humanities and Sciences.

Her responsibilities at PCOR and CHP include administrative and financial oversight, strategic planning, grants/contracts management, and staff supervision.  During her tenure, the centers have grown and so have her responsibilities. She has led her administrative team to work efficiently, as a service-oriented support group with an eye on the large picture of making significant research and educational contributions within the School of Medicine, Stanford as a whole and to the needs of the health care delivery system nationally and internationally.  Nancy inspires others through her hard work, good cheer, professionalism, and belief in those around her. She has a knack for planting seeds and helping others to be more effective in their jobs. Her deep commitment to scholarship and health care motivates everyone around her.
