TPMG Technology Leadership, KPHC Leader for Northern California and The Permanente Federation
Brian Hoberman MD MBA is a practicing hospitalist physician who serves the Federation of the 8 Permanente medical groups as leader of KP HealthConnect, (KPHC), Kaiser Permanente’s electronic medical record system. Brian also leads KPHC in the Northern California region for The Permanente Medical Group.
Kaiser Permanente provides comprehensive care for 8.5 million Californians and cares for 3.5 million patients in 6 regions outside of California. There are more than 100,000 clinical users of KPHC, in setting such as KP’s 39 hospitals, 677 clinics, and virtually with telehealth and desktop medicine.
Brian’s main interest is in using EMR-enabled processes and data to support and enhance clinical and business operations. Areas of interest are care quality and efficiency, patient safety, medication management, workforce efficiency and satisfaction, patient privacy, and organizational adoption of capabilities.
Brian’s role in KPHC began in 2002 when, as practicing physician and local medical center quality and safety leader, he participated in the vendor selection process for KP’s planned EMR.
Brian then served as the physician responsible for developing and implementing KPHC at 21 Northern California Hospitals and Emergency Departments, as well as inpatient and outpatient surgery centers. Under his leadership, inpatient operations transitioned from paper-based processes to full adoption of EMR-based processes over a 4-year period, attaining HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 recognition, reducing mortality, and enhancing quality, safety and efficiency.
In 2010 he was awarded the TPMG Exceptional Contribution award. In 2013 he delivered an “all hands” talk at Epic that was mandatory for all Epic employees. The topic was EMR usability and user experience.
He has an MD degree from UCSF Medical School and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
