Ears For Peers
Stanford Ears For Peers Logo

Ears for Peers (E4P) is a student-to-student peer listening group for the Stanford School of Medicine community. Our trained E4P counselors provide free and confidential counseling to MD, MSTP, and MOM students. We hope to provide a comfortable place for students to discuss anything from everyday frustrations to stress, academics, research, clinics, family issues, mental health, and relationships, to name just a few possible topics. The E4P counselors are MD, MSTP, or MOM students themselves.

Confidentiality

We aim to provide a comfortable and confidential environment for students who seek counseling. Our priority is the welfare and safety of our students. As a general rule, we maintain confidentiality; however, it is worth bearing in mind, that unlike discussions with an attorney, psychiatrist, ombudsperson or clergy, communications to E4P counselors are not shielded by law. There are situations (such as concerns relating to race and gender discrimination, sexual harassment or the personal safety of the student/others) which may need to be disclosed by the E4P counselors because the University may be required to take some action to address these concerns. Although such occurrences are expected to be uncommon, when there is a need for a greater degree of confidentiality, the E4P counselor can suggest to a student a resource (such as one of the four mentioned above) who carries such legal protection.

Training for E4P Counselors

E4P Counselors have had extensive training by Dr. Alejandro Martinez and the Bridge Team in peer-to-peer counseling techniques. We aim to provide a warm and compassionate environment for anyone to discuss anything, from everyday frustrations to serious concerns. E4P Counselors are students who have been trained to listen and respond without giving advice. We are committed to helping the students of the School of Medicine community make their time at Stanford meaningful, successful, and memorable.
