Dura Resources for Neurosurgery Residents

Derek Southwell, MD, PhD

Derek grew up in Minnesota and later moved to Boston, where he began his undergraduate studies at MIT.   His interests in neuroscience were formed there in the laboratory of Susumu Tonegawa, where he studied during his final undergraduate year.  After spending an additional year of research at Harvard Medical School, Derek began MD/PhD studies in the Medical Scientist Training Program at UCSF.  Under the mentorship of Arturo Alvarez Buylla, he completed his PhD thesis on inhibitory neuron transplantation in 2009, and then went on to earn an MD degree in 2011.  Outside of the hospital and lab Derek enjoys canoeing, music, skiing, hot springs and traveling.
