In "Understanding our Biases and Assumptions: Male and Female," Jo Handelsman presents a summary of the substantial body of research on unconscious bias and assumptions in the academic hiring and promotion process. Handelsman is the co-director of the Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and professor of plant pathology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
