Building Leaders for the Future

2007 Faculty Fellows discuss leadership styles with their mentors
"Our programs are creating the kind of leaders we need to increase diversity in academic medicine."
Hannah Valantine, MD,
Senior Associate Dean
Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine
Using the Leadership Approach to diversity as a founding principle, ODL sponsors two innovative programs:
These Programs, in addition to ODL's Skills Building Workshops, are aimed at physicians and scientists with the potential to become the future leaders of academic medicine, biomedical sciences and the practice of medicine on campus and beyond.
ODL programs
- Redefine mentoring with the creation of small groups that offer participants a sense of community and connection to the campus
- Teach the skills needed to develop careers and to achieve diversity on campus and in the workplace
- Emphasize techniques for balancing life/work issues as a way of recruiting and retaining quality leadership
For these programs, ODL selects about one in four candidates who are nominated by their department chairs. Each group is chosen based on a unique evaluation of their leadership skills and potential. The cohorts are also chosen so that they reflect the diversity of today's society -- about half are women and approximately 25 percent are from underrepresented racial or ethnic minorities.
