Faculty and Students:
Investing in the Best and the Brightest
At the heart of any great institution are the people whose vision and talent define it. At Stanford University Medical Center, our ability to attract and retain the nation's leading scientists and clinicians and the most promising students and postdoctoral fellows is limited only by resources. Through The Stanford Challenge, we seek both endowed funding as well as seed support for:
Supporting Faculty
Professorships and Directorships: The highest honor the university can bestow upon a faculty member, an endowed professorship or directorship distinguishes the holder as a leader in science and medicine. It is awarded to the researcher or clinician whose work best represents the ideals of the university, sustains its tradition of academic excellence, and advances its mission of public service.
Faculty Scholar Awards: These awards honor and support outstanding young faculty members while they are establishing their careers. Such awards typically provide funding for three or four years — a period long enough to allow the recipient to complete a significant research project but short enough to make the funding available to many qualified researchers.
Supporting Students
Postdoctoral Fellowships: After earning a PhD, young scientists devote several years to training in a specialized area of basic science or clinical medicine. Postdoctoral fellowships nurture the work of these young investigators, who play an important role in teaching medical students and residents and make tremendous contributions to Stanford's research programs.
Student Scholarships: Financial aid is essential to ensure that the very best medical and doctoral students attend Stanford University Medical School regardless of their personal financial circumstances.
