DBDS Announces Two New Associate Chairs
May 1, 2020
It is my honor to announce two new leadership appointments in our Department of Biomedical Data Science: Dr. Chiara Sabatti has been appointed Associate Chair of Education & Training, and Dr. Lu Tian has been named Associate Chair of Faculty Development, effective May 1, 2020. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate both Chiara and Lu on these new positions, to express how eager I am to work with them on critical departmental programs and activities, and to tell you a bit about their responsibilities in their new roles and the accomplishments that have made them well suited to the chairships.
As Associate Chair of Education & Training, Chiara will primarily focus on facilitating the development and evaluation of robust DBDS course offerings, in consultation with the BMI Program and related degree-granting programs. In addition, she will oversee the Department’s educational outreach activities, including seminars, workshops, symposia and journal clubs. She will ensure the establishment of Department guidelines on training, mentorship and career development of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are supervised by our faculty.
Chiara was one of the founding members of the new Department of Biomedical Data Science. Since 2010, she has served as Faculty Director of our longstanding Workshop in Biostatistics series, which provides a key educational opportunity for students and faculty alike. She also serves as the Associate Director of the Undergraduate Major in Mathematical and Computational Science program, also known as Stanford's Data Science Major. For the last two years, she has served as a faculty mentor in the summer Data Science for Social Good fellowship program.
As Associate Chair of Faculty Development, Lu will be primarily responsible for overseeing faculty development, recruitment, appointment, and support activities in the Department. Together with the Department Chair, he will oversee processes related to the initiation of faculty searches, faculty mentoring and counseling, faculty award nominations and the activities of the Department Appointment and Promotions (A&P) Committee. Lu will help to establish faculty guidelines in terms of teaching expectations and Departmental citizenship, as well as departmental principles pertaining to space utilization and staff support.
Lu was also one of the first faculty members in DBDS, which he joined in 2015; since then, he has actively participated in the DBDS Data Studio program, the long-standing Workshop in Biostatistics series, activities in Stanford's Center for Innovative Study Design (CISD), and other educational events hosted by the Department. Lu is currently Director of the Data Management and Statistical Core in the Stanford Alzheimer Disease Research Center. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and is co-editor of the book, Advanced Medical Statistics (2016).
Please join me in formally welcoming Chiara and Lu to the DBDS Leadership team!
