Critical Care Medicine

Myer H. Rosenthal and CCM at Stanford

Mike Rosenthal, Stanford Critical Care

On September 1, 2005, Myer H. Rosenthal (Mike to all of us) completed thirty years of service at Stanford as the chief of the Critical Care division in the Department of Anestheisa.. In 1975, Mike and Anne moved from Bethesda Naval Hospital to Palo Alto and created the Intensive Care Unit at Stanford as the national model for multidisciplinary critical care. He then nourished critical care through its growth, serving as the Medical Director of the Critical Care Units for 22 years and as the division chief for the next 30 years. As a result of his recruitment efforts, the Critical Care division of the anesthesia department now includes over a dozen faculty working in four different critical care services at Stanford and the Palo Alto VA. During his three decades, Mike has helped train 100 fellows, and more than half subsequently entered academic Critical Care Medicine. These fellows now include multiple department chairs and division chiefs throughout the country. Mike has been a national leader in critical care and has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists.
