Tips and Tricks

Goodbye, Box Sync; Hello, Box Drive

Box has announced that its Box Drive desktop application will eventually replace Box Sync. Fortunately, it's easy to make the switch.

It’s true – Box has let it be known that Box Sync is on the chopping block. Although an official end date hasn’t yet been announced, if you’re using Box Sync, now would be a good time to switch to Box Drive.

Box Drive and Box Sync are applications that enable you to access your Stanford Medicine Box content from your desktop.

  • Box Drive brings your entire Stanford Medicine Box folder tree to your desktop.
  • Box Sync enables you to choose the specific files and folders to sync between Stanford Medicine Box and your desktop.

Although the tools are similar, having both installed on the same computer is unnecessary and can cause multiple issues.  Fortunately, it's easy to transition fully to Box Drive. In fact, the Box Drive installer includes an uninstaller that automatically removes Box Sync and cleans up your synced content before it then installs Box Drive.

Start using Box Drive

To get Box Drive, simply the install Box Drive application and log in. When you launch the Box Drive installer, it will prompt you to uninstall Box Sync. The entire process takes only a few minutes. If you need help or are unsure if you have Box Sync or Box Drive installed on your device,  call the IRT Service Desk at 650-725-8000.

It's important that you take note of the final screen of the Box Sync uninstaller prompts.

Store on the cloud; work from your desktop

You can use Box Drive to do nearly everything you do with Box Sync – and more.  With Box Drive, you can mark content for offline use, caching this content on your device's hard drive so you can work on it without being connected to the Internet.  Box Drive also has another trick up its sleeve – it doesn’t actually download files until you use them. This saves valuable space on your hard drive. For more information, check out
