Dr. Lavori is Professor and Vice Chair of Biomedical Data Science, and a prominent leader in the field of clinical study design. His focus over the last 20 years has been on innovations in the design of randomized clinical trials. He is one of the founders of the field of trial design for adaptive treatment strategies, and his findings have been reported in nearly 300 articles. He is co-director of Spectrum, and leads the program in biostatistics, epidemiology, and study design.
Dr. Lai is Professor of Statistics, and by courtesy, of Biomedical Data Science and Health Research and Policy in the School of Medicine and of the Institute of Mathematical and Computational Engineering in the School of Engineering. He is Director of the Financial and Risk Modeling Institute, and Co-director of the Center for Innovative Study Design and was the Co-Director of the Biostatistics Core of Stanford Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Stanford School of Medicine. He is an eminent innovator in statistical methodology, clinical trial designs, and health care research, published 300 papers, 14 books, and produced 73 Ph.D students, many of them are now the leading statisticians. Dr. Lai received many honors and recognitions, including Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) Award in 1983 and election to Academia Sinica in 1994. He has held regular and visiting faculty appointments at Columbia University, UC Berkeley, University of Heidelberg, Nankai University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and National University of Singapore, and holds advisory positions with the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, and Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shenzhen.
Dr. Lu is Professor of Biomedical Data Science, and by courtesy, of Radiology and Health Research and Policy in the School of Medicine, and Co-director of the Center for Innovative Study Design and Co-director of Biostatistics Core of Stanford Comprehensive Cancer Institute in the School of Medicine. His research focuses on statistical methods in clinical trial design, medical diagnosis, and medical decision making. He has published more than 200 papers and held leadership position as Director for the VA Cooperative Studies Program Palo Alto Coordinating Center (2007-2016) and President of the International Chinese Statistical Association (2014).
Lu Tian, ScD.
Dr. Tian is Associate Professor of Biomedical Data Science, and by courtesy, of Statistics. His research focuses on statistical methods in clinical trial design, precision medicine, and survival analysis. He has published more than 60 papers on statistical methodology. Before joining Stanford, he was assistant professor at Northwestern University. Dr. Tian also serves as associated editor for multiple statistical journals and current board member of the International Chinese Statistical Association.
Balasubramanian Narasimhan, PhD
Naras is Senior Research Scientist in the Departments of Biomedical Data Science and of Statistics. He is also the Director of the Data Coordinating Center (School of Medicine). His research area is statistical computing. His current focus is on statistical tools for bioinformatics. Along with colleagues Rob Tibshirani and Trevor Hastie, he has developed several software packages for analyzing microarray data like Significance Analysis of Microarrays, and Prediction Analysis of Microarrays.
James Zou, PhD
I am an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Data Science and, by courtesy, of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. I work on a wide range of problems in machine learning (from proving mathematical properties to designing new models and algorithms) and am especially interested in applications in human genomics. I received my Ph.D. from Harvard in 2014 and was fortunate to be a member of Microsoft Research New England. Before this, I completed Part III in Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and was a Simons fellow at U.C. Berkeley. I joined Stanford in Fall 2016 and am excited to be an inaugural Chan-Zuckerberg Investigator. I lead the Stanford Laboratory for Machine Learning, Genomics and Health.
