Objectives and Goals

Community Health is one of the seven Scholarly Concentration Foundations. The Community Health curriculum empowers future physicians to improve the health of diverse communities and reduce health inequities through innovative scholarship and direct community engagement. Students learn the means to effect change through reflective service-learning, rigorous community-responsive scholarship, advocacy, and civic leadership.

Requirements

Students who pursue Community Health in conjunction with an application, from Immunology to International Health, are required to complete 6 units, including:

MED 247 Methods in community assessment, evaluation, and research  (3 units, Spring, Wednesdays 3-6pm)
Or
HRP 259  
Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Epidemiology (3 units, Autumn, Mondays and Wednesdays 4:15-5:45pm)

PEDS 250  Social and environmental determinants of health (3 units, Autumn, Wednesdays 1:30-4:30pm)

For students interested in completing all 12 units in the CH Scholarly area, the remaining 6 units can be completed by choosing from the following courses:

PEDS 253: Applied Skill-Building in Clinical and Community-Based Research (2 units)
Skill-building via detailed individualized feedback from instructor on all aspects of research projects.  Topics include: grant proposal preparation; study design; field implementation; data entry, analysis and interpretation; and conference abstract/manuscript preparation. Open to medical students, graduate students, and undergraduates.

HRP 262:  Intermediate biostatistics: Regression, prediction, and survival analysis (3 units)
HRP 351:  Innovation and Management in Health Care (4 units)
HRP 391:  Political Economy of Health Care (4 units)
HRP 392:  Analysis of Costs, Risks, and Benefits in Health Care (4 units)
MED 230:  Rethinking International Health (2-3 units)
MED 262:  Economics of Health Improvement in Developing Countries (5 units)
MS&E 252:  Decision Analysis I (3-4 units)
PEDS 222: Beyond Health Care – Seeking Health in Society (3 units)
PUBLPOL 204A:  Politics and Collective Action (4 units)
PUBLPOL 204B:  Organizations (4 units)
PUBLPOL 205A:  Judgment and Decision Making (4 units)
PUBLPOL 205B:  Public Policy and Social Psychology: Implications and Applications (4 units)
Medical Spanish (3 units max.)

There are other electives allowed from the School of Business, Education, Leadership Labs, etc., that may be used towards the elective coursework with prior approval from the Director, Dr. Chamberlain.  If you are unsure if your intended coursework can be counted, consult with Dr. Chamberlain and present a rationale to explain how the course is relevant to Community Health.
