Archive of rare books: Andreas Vesalius, 1514-1564; De humani
corporis fabrica (1543)
The Lane Medical Library Special Collections includes a well preserved copy
of the first edition of Vesalius' Fabrica. This renowned medical book
exemplifies the new empirical attitude that characterized anatomical
practice as it matured during the Renaissance. One of the most radical
changes in the history of medicine is represented on the title page.
Vesalius himself conducts the dissection rather than reading from a
classical text and ordering assistants handle the cadaver. The woodcuts
were probably designed by the Flemish artist Jan Stevenz van Calcar
(ca.1499-ca. 1550). Together these illustrations and text represent a
standard by which every later anatomical atlas was judged.
