When I started looking for job, I wasn't sure whether I should opt for job from an industry or from an academic institution. My inclination was towards an academic job, but I was not sure about the selection criteria for an academic job. Several factors like publications, presentation, new ideas may be a deciding factor.

Mr. Michael Alvarez, Director at the School of Medicine Career Center helped me with various career options that I could explore. His advice was "first impression is the best impression" which is not new, but it increases your chance of landing in a good job. I took 2 months to prepare my research statement, curriculum vitae and my presentation slides. I got job offers both from industry and University! I opted for the academic position.
