The best advice I can provide is to remain open-minded about your career options. At the start of my postdoctoral fellowship, I had not even considered a career in industry. However, as part of my fellowship, I did three years of bench research in Chemical Engineering, at Chaitan Kholsa's lab. That experience generated my interest in drug discovery and development. Currently, in addition to clinical research, I am planning on seeing patients on a weekly basis at a clinic and attending on the infectious diseases consult service at a New Haven hospital. As it turns out, this is the perfect combination of patient care and research for me.
