During my pathology residency and postdoctoral training I became aware of opportunities in industry. I realized that the skill sets acquired during physician/scientist training in academia were well-suited for companies bringing discoveries from the bench to the bedside. At the end of my post-doc, after a School of Medicine Career Center (SoMCC) workshop, I met a recruiter from Genentech and we quickly discussed my background and how these might contribute to Genentech’s mission. This led to introductions at the company and eventually a rewarding position that leverages my training and knowledge in both pathology and science. I recommend keeping your mind open to the rapidly growing opportunities in industry and utilizing the resources at the SoMCC to help develop a successful job search.
