The San Francisco Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is seeking
dynamic, hard-working, and fun-loving volunteers to serve as
counselors at MDA’s summer camp from August 6th—August 12, 2011
in Occidental, CA. MDA Camp is offered free of charge to youth
between the ages of 6 and 17 years of age living with one of the 43
moror neuron conditions covered by the MDA. MDA camp offers a
meaningful sleep-away camp experience for youths facing physical
challenges, providing the opportunity to form powerful friendships and
build self-confidence in a safe and supportive environment.
Each counselor is assigned one camper, and all counselors receive
training to meet the needs of their campers. Campers possess varying
abilities and needs; some children may have general physical
weakness and need minimal assistance, while others use wheelchairs
and require more assistance. A pediatric neurologist and nurse are onhand
24 hours a day to fulfill campers’ medical needs and assist
counselors whenever necessary. Counselors serve as friends and
caregivers for their campers, helping them to take part in sports, arts
and crafts, and other activities designed to a wide range of physical
activities.
Serving as a volunteer counselor is an excellent way to make a
difference in the life of a child, as well as to gain volunteer hours and
valuable experience for your resume or graduate school application.
This volunteer opportunity is particularly well-suited to individuals
interested in pursuing careers in healthcare, medical social work, or the
nonprofit sector.
