It's Not All Medicine: CleanTech Meets BioTech
The burgeoning CleanTech industry is driven by a goal of reducing of greenhouse gas emissions world wide. The BioTech industry is enabling the CleanTech industry to develop clean, alternative energy solutions. From bioengineered algae to transgenic miscanthus plants, the BioTech industry is providing the means to produce cost effective, renewable liquid fuels. Topics to be addressed include:
- What companies have jumped into this space?
- Where are the opportunities?
- Where will the industry be in 5, 10 and 20 years?

MICHAEL WARD, Partner, Morrison & Foerster
Dr. Ward is head of the SF office’s Life Sciences Patent practice where he manages a team of patent agents and attorneys with strong technical backgrounds. His work covers technologies related to small molecules, protein therapeutics, pharmaceuticals, antibodies, nuclear transfer cloning, gene therapy, stem cells, RNA and protein expression diagnostics, genetically engineered plants, new plant varieties and vaccines. He manages intellectual property due diligence efforts for venture capitalists, investment bankers, and companies involved in mergers and acquisitions, as well as providing strategic patent counsel to numerous life sciences companies, universities and research institutions. He is also the founder of the firm’s Plant Intellectual Property group and serves on the steering committee for the firm’s Cleantech practice. He earned his BS at UC Berkeley (1981), MS and PhD at UC Davis (1984/88), and JD at Golden Gate School of Law (1996).
GREG IKONEN, General Counsel, Mendel Biotechnology
Greg joined Mendel in December 2007 with over fifteen years' experience across a broad range of legal and business matters, including structuring and negotiating complex transactions, intellectual property counseling, and general corporate and litigation issues, with a focus on biotechnology companies. Greg previously served as general counsel at a Bay Area biotechnology company. Prior to that he was a partner in the Life Sciences Group at Heller Ehrman LLP, and a partner at Venture Law Group, a Silicon Valley law firm focused on venture-backed life sciences and technology companies. Greg holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
