Course details:  

This 11-week course is for UCSF* life scientists and healthcare professionals who want to learn how to build value from their biomedical inventions and ideas. Participating students form teams around real technologies and at the culmination, formally present them to a panel of prominent venture capitalists.  Idea to IPO students experience a tailored introduction to life science entrepreneurship, with practical information and exercises on:

        ·         Start-up structures
        ·         Analyzing market opportunities
        ·         Regulatory hurdles
        ·         Sources of financing for new ventures
        ·         Writing an executive summary and business plan
        ·         "Pitching" to venture capitalists


About the Instructors:

G. Steven Burrill, is CEO of Burrill & Company, where he leads a team dedicated to venture capital investment, building strategic partnerships, and developing an esteemed and widely-read annual report on the biotechnology industry.  Burrill was named one of the 50 Scientific American "Visionaries" in 2002.

Charles Craik is UCSF Professor, Depts of Pharm Chem, Chemical & Molecular Pharmacology, and Biochemistry & Biophysics.  He is also the director of the Chemistry and Chemical Biology Graduate Program. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Columbia University in New York and carried out his postdoctoral research at UCSF with Dr. William Rutter.
