Time: 12:00-1:30 PM
Location: Clark Auditorium

Event details:

“Business Development” means different things in different settings, but in general it can be described as ‘deal making’.  Within the biotech industry, this is a highly technical activity, since the subject matter of the deal centers on medical and scientific technologies (a.k.a. intellectual property).  It is also a highly critical activity in this setting, since the vast majority of drugs commercialized are the product of combining research from inside and outside the company, and the ability to identify and in-license the most essential technologies is crucial.

In this program, Michael Penn provides an inside look at Business Development at Genentech, illustrating how and why advanced medical and/or research training is a requirement within this role.  Based on his first-hand experience identifying research priorities, leading technology evaluations, selecting technologies for Genentech, and negotiating deals, he will review:

  • Business Development at Genentech – An Overview
  • Scientific and/or Clinical Training – A Requirement
  • Fundamentals of Scientific ‘Deal Making’ – Case/Example
