Overview:

Genentech is a global leader, renowned for its success in developing large-molecule-based therapeutics, and for its science-based approach to business.  Recently, the company launched its own Small Molecule Drug Discovery group, encompassing the departments of Discovery Chemistry, Biochemical Pharmacology and Screening, Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics, and Small molecule Pharmaceutical Sciences.  The integration of these capabilities brings with it a host of opportunities, challenges, rewards, and exciting potential that the company is keen to realize.

In this program, Michael Varney (VP and director for this division), provides visibility into Genentech’s operations, organization, and combined approach to Research and Discovery.  The perspectives he brings are based on his own personal leadership experience, as well as much success as a scientist and executive in a variety of settings.  Intended for both clinical and research trainees alike, please join us to learn first-hand about:

  • Discovery Science and Research within Genentech
  • Scientific project leadership, program management, and personal motivation
  • Small molecule research directions, goals, and challenges
  • Team-dynamics and the importance of team-based approach to science
  • Professional alignment considerations and success factors
