Event details:   This is the pivotal moment for patients, educators and advocates to pull together, hone their skills and mobilize in the battle for cures.

In 2006, we are at a critical crossroads in the fight to advance embryonic stem cell research. Numerous bills that could vitally affect this life-saving research are on the U.S. Senate roster awaiting a vote. The Senate could vote to ratify last year's Castle-DeGette bill, which expands federal funding for stem cell research, but President Bush has vowed to veto it. At the same time, certain lawmakers have launched a fresh assault to criminalize SCNT (proposing lengthy prison terms for both researchers and patients seeking treatments) and other forms of legitimate research, while proposing that precious funds be diverted to dubious research projects seeking so-called "alternatives" to embryonic stem cell research. Meanwhile, states around the country are fighting bans and grappling with a host of legislative and ballot measures to legalize, protect and provide additional funding for the most promising research of our time.

The Genetics Policy Institute's Policy and Advocacy Summit II, "Empowering the Pro-Cures Coalition," is the place to arm yourself for stem cell advocacy in the real world. Learn what scientists, patients and advocates are up against at the national, state and local levels. Meet leading experts from the full spectrum of science, business, ethics and stem cell policy. Most importantly, learn how to develop a pro-research message and formulate strategies to counter the tactics of the anti-research opponents.
