PGY-2 Infectious Disease Program

Program Overview

We are not enrolling for the 2024-2025 academic year and will re-open 1 PGY2 ID resident position for the 2025-2026 academic year.

The Stanford Antimicrobial Safety and Sustainability program is recognized as an Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) Center of Excellence and a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance and Stewardship. The residency program will offer the resident clinical training and mentorship through a variety of experiences in infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.

In addition to clinical practice experiences, the PGY-2 Infectious Disease resident will have the opportunity to participate in academic activities, which include an optional teaching certificate, precepting pharmacy residents/students, and providing didactic lectures to the Stanford Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. The resident will also conduct a research project and engage in leadership development.

The SHC PGY-2 ID Residency Program is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). One applicant is accepted per year.

Program Mission

The mission of the PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program is to train highly qualified pharmacists in developing the skills necessary to become successful and comprehensive infectious diseases pharmacotherapy and antimicrobial stewardship experts.

  1. Provide optimal clinical care to patients with infectious diseases
  2. Function as an effective member of the health care team
  3. Educate health care professionals, students, patients, and the community about antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance
  4. Develop excellent written and verbal communication skills
  5. Demonstrate time management and problem-solving skills
  6. Become a leader within the pharmacy profession

Program Structure

The Infectious Disease Specialty Residency is currently undergoing the accreditation process by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The program follows the ASHP Residency Learning System (RLS) and its goals and learning objectives are consistent with standards developed by ASHP.

Required Rotation

  • Orientation/Training (2 weeks)
  • Antimicrobial stewardship – clinical focus (4 weeks)
  • Antimicrobial stewardship – administrative focus (4 weeks + longitudinal)
  • General ID consult service (4 weeks x 2 rotations)
  • Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant ID consult service (4 weeks)
  • Solid Organ Transplant ID consult service (4 weeks)
  • ICU ID consult service (4 weeks)
  • Microbiology Laboratory (3 weeks)      

Elective Rotation

  • Pediatric ID (Stanford Children’s Health)
  • HIV clinic (Santa Clara Valley Medical Center)
  • Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship (Santa Clara Valley Medical Center)
  • Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship (VA Palo Alto)
  • Hematology/Oncology
  • Bone Marrow Transplant
  • Medical/Surgical ICU
  • Solid Organ Transplant
  • Emergency Medicine

Longitudinal Experiences

  • Complete and present a longitudinal research project at a national conference
  • Complete and present findings of a quality improvement initiative
  • Development of an institutional clinical guideline or pathway
  • Participate in teaching activities with residents and/or students
  • Teaching certificate program (optional)
  • Participate in SHC Antimicrobial Subcommittee
  • Present a Continuing Education lecture to peers
  • Clinical staffing 1 weekend every 3 weeks

Compensation and Benefits

The resident will receive a competitive annual stipend of approximately $81,000 with full benefits, including an excellent health care benefits package and 10 days of paid time off (PTO). In addition, the resident will receive educational leave and a stipend to attend and participate in various pharmacy or infectious diseases conferences such as the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December and Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDWeek) meeting in October.

 

Eligibility

  • Completion of Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 residency program
  • Participate in an on-site interview at Stanford Health Care
  • Obtain licensure to practice pharmacy in the state of California before October 1st

Brian Lu, Pharm.D. 2022 ID Resident

Brian received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles and Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He then completed his acute care PGY-1 pharmacy practice residency at Stanford Health Care. His professional interests include Gram-negative resistance, therapeutic drug monitoring, and clinical research. In his free time, Brian enjoys fishing, cooking, and exploring nature
