Preparing for your Brain Scan

About MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive technique for viewing the brain's structure and functions. The MRI machine is essentially a large magnet and there are two main forms: structural and functional. Structural MRI provides detailed images of the brain's size and shape. During the structural MRI, your child will watch a movie of their choice while in the scanner. Functional MRI (fMRI) images the parts of the brain that are most active when when performing various tasks, such as math, by measuring blood flow that occurs in an active part of the brain. During the fMRI portion, your child will play a few math games. For our studies, we do not use any injection or sedation.
