Memory in Autism

Seeking children ages 9-12 years old with High Functioning Autism as well as children with a typical developmental trajectory

The study investigates how children with autism process different types of memories by examining brain region activity and connectivity during the completion of memory tasks.

Participants receive:

  1. Up to $200 for completing the study
  2. Pictures of their brain

The study consists of 5 appointments:

Appointments 1 and 2: Neuropsychological Testing
During the first and second appointments, your child will complete a series of neuropsychological assessments administered by Stanford assessors. The assessments include measures of IQ, reading, math, and memory abilities. The first appointment will last approximately 3 hours, and the second appointment will last approximately 3.5 hours. Participants will be compensated $50 for completing each neuropsychological appointment ($100 total for completing both).

Appointments 3 and 4: Autism Testing
Appointment 3: The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS): The ADOS is a “play”-based assessment. A trained clinician will observe your child’s behavior during a series of structured and semi-structured tasks aimed at assessing social interaction skills. This appointment will last approximately 1 hour. Appointment 4: The Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI): The ADI is a structured interview between a clinician/assessor and the child's parent(s) aimed at assessing autistic traits in social interaction, communication, and language domains. The ADI is a parent-only appointment; your child does not participate in this interview. This appointment will last approxiately 3 hours. Participants will be compenstaed $50 for completing the Autism Testing (both the ADOS and ADI assessments)

Appointments 5: MRI Scan
Participants will undergo a brain scan (MRI). Pictures of their brain will be taken while they complete computer-based memory tasks. An MRI scan is a safe, non-invasive procedure that does not use x-rays or radiation. This appointment will last approximately 3 hours. Participants will be compensated $50 for completing the MRI scan.

The neuropsychological assessments will take place at our offices at 1070 Arastradero Road in Palo Alto.  MRI scans will take place at the Lucas Center on Welch Road and Pasteur Drive. To see where the sessions are located, please click here.
