In clinical practice many standard equations are based on a categorical definition of race/ethnicity. This is true for many clinical outcomes including the calculation for determining kidney function, when to start treatment for prostate cancer and in the case of my presentation, determining reference equations for lung function. Here, we used three national cohorts, we measured genetic ancestry and demonstrated that our new equations for measuring lung function are improved if we use genetic ancestry vs. self-described race/ethnicity.
