Biodesign NEXT

Biodesign NEXT

The Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign offers a portfolio of courses to engage Stanford students in the important challenge of reinventing healthcare with the help of technology. Each of our courses teaches our need-driven, value-based approach to health technology innovation and how to apply it to improve lives everywhere.

Starting in 2016-17, Stanford Biodesign will recognize the most promising projects from a subset of our courses by providing these teams with additional mentoring and extension funding through the Biodesign NEXT extension funding program.

The purpose of the program is to provide high-performing teams with additional time and resources to help them advance their technologies. We are also focused on extending the learning experience to help prepare these aspiring innovators for careers in health technology innovation.

Teams from the following Stanford Biodesign courses are eligible to apply:

  • BIOE 273 Biodesign for Mobile Health
  • BIOE 141A/B Bioengineering Senior Capstone Design
  • MED 275B Biodesign Fundamentals

Up to two teams per course will be chosen for extension funding awards each year. Teams must include at least one undergraduate student to apply. Exceptions are granted only for teams originating from BIOE 273.

The primary objective of the program is to provide students working on promising health technology innovation projects with:

  • Time during the academic year to continuing developing their promising technologies
  • Academic credit for their efforts, if desired
  • Guidance in defining and meeting key milestones
  • Access to relevant experts and advisors
  • Deeper, expanded training on advanced topics
  • Funding to execute on critical deliverables

Biodesign NEXT extension funding is typically awarded to teams in the 1-2 quarters immediately following the course in which their projects were initiated.

Winning teams will continue work on their projects on the Stanford campus, with support and assistance from the Stanford Biodesign team.

Biodesign NEXT will be introduced to students in BIOE 273, BIOE 141A/B, and MED 275B at the beginning of the quarter in which those courses are offered. For general questions, please contact Marta Zanchi or Lyn Denend
