On tap for today:

1. Morning Jog, Day in Lab
2. Journal Club

Morning Jog, Day in Lab

As penitence for last night's gluttony, I decided to run the campus drive loop this morning (in the neighborhood of 4 or 4.5 miles). The initial plan was to get up at 7:15 am, but that was clearly way too ambitious, so instead I rolled out of bed at about 8 am and did my jog. After the whole morning routine I made it into lab at about 10:15 am.

Thankfully our tumors are finally growing (yay!) which means that I spent the day doing experiments. I took a picture of what the inside of a mouse looks like, but as that may be a bit too explicit for some people's eyes, and I don't want the PETA people all over me, so I decided to leave it out (though if you are really interested, you can just email me).

Journal Club

Each Monday evening at 6:30 pm, the immunology program has a journal club (JC for short). While I'm at it, you should know that there are LOTS of acronyms in grad school, so for future reference, I will no longer type out immunology, and instead will use immuno (which is what we call it in daily life).

Journal Club

Each week in JC, a different student presents a current paper in the literature (i.e. scientific journals) related to immunology. Each student has to present once a year (I presented last week) and the week after you present you are responsible for bringing dinner (instance number 2 in the blog of free dinner). Yes, that's right, we get free dinner every Monday evening, in exchange for one presentation a year (there are some perks to grad school). Anyway, as I had to get dinner, I needed to cut out of lab a bit earlier than I would have liked (5 pm).

One of the cool things about Stanford is that it's a pretty scenic place. These are some of the hills that I ride by on the way to/from lab (taken from my car while I was at the stop light)...

Even if it's a crappy day in lab, it's hard to be too mad when you have the sun shining brilliantly and the pretty views (and although man does not live on landscape and climate alone, it does help).

Yummy Italian food

I decided on dinner from Buca di Beppo's a very good Italian restaurant that's located in town (and is actually a chain). The woman talked me into getting way too much spaghetti, but I was able to give it away to another hungry grad student (the guy I met at church on Saturday actually).

Homework, then chilling

After JC, I came back to finish up the exam. I started working at 7:45 pm and imposed a deadline of 9 pm to finish (mainly to keep from wandering around the internet/AIM/facebook, which serves no purpose but to hinder my productivity). I was nearing completion at 8:30 pm when one of my best friends from college called. So we talked for about 25 mins, but b/c I'm just that good, I was able to meet my 9 pm deadline (really I just google searched for the little bit of remaining info I was looking for while we talked).

TV
Tony and Mike on PTI

Now that the exam was done, I decided to reward myself by sitting down for my favorite TV show, ESPN's Pardon the Interruption (PTI). It's hosted by two Washington Post columnists (Tony Kornheiser and Mike Wilbon) and they talk about sports, popular culture, and everything else (e.g. today there was talk of the NBA playoffs, David Blaine's stunt, Barry Bonds/steroids, and the birthday of Toni Tenille of Captain and Tenille fame).

I started watching in college, as it came on at about 5:30 pm when I would be cooking dinner. But since I live on the west coast, an ESPN is live all the time, it comes on 2:30 pm which means I have to tape it (yes, I use a VCR, no TiVo for Kenny, unfortunately...on second thought, it's probably better that way b/c a Tivo would be a crippling blow to my attempts at productivity as I could record and then watch endless hours of TV).

Now that the night is winding down, I need to do some more reading and then make my way to bed.
