About Me

Kenny Gibbs

My name is Kenneth Gibbs, Jr (I go by Kenny though, Kenneth is so formal). I am a 22-year-old, first-year PhD student in the Immunology Program.

I'm originally from Durham, NC (a place that I refer to as "The REAL DC" i.e. Durham county, though my friends from Washington DC tell me that I'm crazy). Recently my hometown has gotten a lot of bad press, but I'd like to say, don't believe the hype--Durham was a great place to grow up. I graduated in May 2005 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

I feel truly blessed to have an opportunity to study here at Stanford, and though I complain sometimes, I definitely know that I made the right decision.

The instructions say that I should say what I want to do after I get done at Stanford, though as I'm in the first year of a program that takes ~5.5 to graduate, I feel that may be a bit premature. I may want to continue on doing bench research, or branch into policy or education...we'll just have to see.

I've noticed that I seem to get profiled a lot for these sort of things. When I was in college, I was on the cover of "Black Issues in Higher Education (Feb 2004)," I was interviewed for the PBS Special "The College Track," I was on the UMBC website a couple of times in a month, and since I've been here, I was also featured on the website (with a picture that I was not crazy about... Stanford Profile).

Also, if you google "Kenneth Gibbs" a link on me (from UMBC) is currently the first thing that comes up and 4 of the pictures that come up on the first page are of me. It's weird...I often wonder why I get so much attention for just living my everyday life [I have my guesses but that's discussion for another time]...

I hope that you find the blog interesting reading. It is important to note, though this does represent the past week in my life, THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL WEEK. Let me reiterate, THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL WEEK, lest some recruit read this and think that Stanford is all fun w/ minimal work.

There's normally lots more work, lots less free food (though ample free food nonetheless), and a lot fewer social outings. But hey, I guess you picked the right time to tag along :)

Since is the closest I'll ever get to having an MTV "Diary" I feel compelled to say thier tag line: You think you know, but you have no idea... this is weblog of Kenneth Gibbs. Enjoy the ride!
